Apollo – Performed by Icebreaker with BJ Cole

By in live

A majority of the earth’s populace will never visit space. Thankfully, there are books, records, and films innumerable enough to fire the imagination and prevent us being distraught by that unsurprising fact. And let’s face it, from what we know, the moon is a pretty boring place. Dust, rock and a few flags: it’s hardly worth saving up for one of those Virgin Galactic tickets.

Brian Eno‘s Apollo is a cheaper, and more accessible option than the Apollo program, and – judging by the Tom Hanks film – it’s vastly more enjoyable and less stressful. So, it is with a supercilious air that the audience of the Queen Elizabeth Hall take to their comfortable, padded, leather seats to watch the 12 musicians of Icebreaker attempt to recreate those warm, ambient tones with the aid of BJ Cole on pedal steel guitar.

Ry Cooder – Paris, Texas

By in Musical Murmurings

Matt Poacher turned me on to this album over at the Dawn Songs site. I picked it up today for a fiver, and it hasn’t left the CD player. I love it so much, I ordered a double ‘Music by Ry Cooder’ album (it sounds great, I heard it on that Spotify).

So, yeah. I came late to this. Don’t make the same mistake.

Kate and the CARE Walkathon

By in Random

On Saturday 2nd October, Kate, along with many other CARE staff and supporters will be taking part in the CARE Walkathon, a 25km walking challenge along the river in Windsor.

All funds raised will support CARE’s Rapid Response Fund (RRF) which enables them to be amongst the first to respond when an emergency occurs. For example in an emergency like the Pakistan Floods, where more than 1600 were killed and more than 20 million people were affected. More than 750 pre positioned shelter and other basic non food items were distributed immediately as the extent of the floods damage became apparent. The CARE response has now reached more than 90,000 people

Kate has been fortunate enough to have seen CARE’s work in a number of emergency responses over the last four years and has been impressed with the professionalism and preparedness of our country office operations. Most recently she wasdeployed after the earthquake and the floods. Both of these response programmes were facilitated by the Rapid Response Fund by enabling Care to preposition stocks of key relief items for immediate distribution when emergency strikes.

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: CARE International UK gets your money faster and, if you’re a taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.

Thank you for reading and please sponsor her!

Pleased to say that on Friday, September 10th, I was asked to contribute to the excellent Quietus music magazine. How nice is that?

Of course, I said yes.

They had me at ‘Hello’.
