Kate In Haiti – Valentine’s Day

By in Random

This is my fourth day in Haiti already. I haven’t really spent much time out of the office as my job is proposal writing and information management, but I hope to get out and see at least one of the shelter distributions coming up in the next week or so.

Scratching

By in Musical Murmurings

When I used to DJ in the mid ’90s, I used to love scratching. Obviously, the form’s evolved far from the basic cuts in the ’80s, and I could never keep up with the turntablistic DMC and ITF champs, particularly when it came to beat juggling (that’s using two copies of the same records to create different beats).

Nevertheless, I’ve kept my QFO because I like the sound of scratching and thought I’d have a little jam after picking up Volume Two of the B-Music Weekend Breaks on vinyl.

Kate in Haiti – Arrival

By in Random

From Dominican Republic we took an 8 seater plane to Port au Prince. The plane had a faded glory: beige leather interior with drinks holders. It’s the kind of thing I imagine Tom Jones enjoyed in the ‘70s, piloted by a cowboy sort called Gordy who punctuated each sentence with a friendly wink.

Help! Haiti – Ninja Nutter.

By in Musical Murmurings

Bill from GIITTV.com laid this on me. Apparently it’s by a group called Ninja Nutter.

‘Help! Haiti’ features a chorus based on the famous Lennon song, mashed up with some incredibly basic ragga riddims.

I think it says everything it needs to.

Haiti and the musical response.

By in Musical Murmurings

It’s disaster time, and the stars are out. Having now heard the appalling single for Haiti, I can firmly say that it is a song I never wish to hear again. But that does not mean I disagree with the principle of the song. For the millions of people that watch X-Factor and relentlessly buy shoddy covers of classic songs because some schmaltzy kid down on his / her luck sings it with a broad enough appeal, this is their way of donating.
