Some time in the mid ’90s, there was a rock club in Birmingham called ‘Edwards No.8‘. Me and my college friends loved it – we were there almost every week (giros allowing). Some of us even worked (and got fired from) there. I remember rehearsing for an appearance on ‘The Big Breakfast‘ in there. Fun times. Always broke, forever smoking, scrounging drinks and draped in leather jackets and band patches.
Sadly, Eddies burned down. To be fair, attendance had dwindled and the music was awful: regular DJ Steve Gerrard had moved on, taking his £3 mixtapes with him.
Anyway, with the arrival of the fabulous Spotify, I’ve had a chance to revist my somewhat gloomy, plaid-laden past. If you’re at all interested on what a bunch of drunk, moody teenagers were listening to in the Midlands at the best club the area had to offer (and you’ve got Spotify): click this link. Be warned, there’s no Blur or Oasis here (we didn’t like that Britpop shite), but you may find some tunes you like that you ‘aint never heard before.
Though I’m still in touch with a few of the old heads, I don’t know where most of the Edwards crew got to. I suspect, like me, they lost their minds, got married, and work shit jobs.
Oh well, whatever, nevermind.
