Jade Goody is dying. That’s the truth. She wants some cash to see her boys’ future set secure. Fair enough. Hasn’t her boyfriend just got out of jail or something? And now they’re going to get married in a hurry. The sycophantic red tops were full of sympathy for ‘poor, brave Jade’ as she struggles on – choosing a wedding dress.

Well, I would say I’m sorry – but I’m not. How can I be? Let’s be clear – I’m not happy she’s suffering – I think it’s tragic, and awfully sad. But surely, your last few days should be spent with your family, your friends – the people you love most. But Jade is choosing to spend her last remaining time on this ugly little planet with the people that put her where she is – the public.

Bill Hicks died of pancreatic cancer – as peaceably as he could with his family in Little Rock – shunning the public.  As the Wikipedia entry says “He called his friends to say goodbye, before he stopped speaking on February 14, and died of cancer in the presence of his parents at 11:20 p.m. on February 26, 1994.

Is that not a more responsible, respectful approach to death? There is nothing glorious about dying – no matter what movies tell us. Televising your wedding whilst you’re dying so you can fund your children’s…er – what exactly? How many children have no parents – and how many children grow up with low to no incomes? This is an example of how low budget media  exploit tragic circumstances for profit.

Only this time, the victim is up for it.
